The MIX Market Heat Map

A heat map is a interactive graphical interface which uses rectangles to represent data. The MIX Market Heat map enables you to instantly extract the essence of vast amounts of data on microfinance institutions (MFIs).

The rectangles differ in size, color and placement. Make your own heat map by defining the variables below. Create your own heat map to visualize three different layers of data at once by following the instructions in the call out boxes. Note that not all relationships between variables have analytical value. Heat map technology is provided by Panopticon.

Items are shown as boxes of varying colors, representing a particular measure (e.g., item performance). In general, blue indicates the measure is positive while red indicates it is negative. The brightness of the color, as shown on the Data Range, represents the degree to which the measure is positive or negative for the each item, with black indicating a zero value. Items with missing data are displayed in gray. Additional navigation is described below.

Main Navigation

Categorization: Create groups of data by choosing from multiple categories, including Region, Institutional Type, Profit Status etc.
Size: Choose the data that will determine the size of the square. This list only includes positive numbers. Absolute numbers, such as the Gross Loan Portfolio, may create squares that are much larger than others. Remove the outliers with the Crystallizer (below).
Color: Determines what data to be used for color of the shapes. In general, blue indicates the measure is positive and red indicates it is negative.
Highlight: Allows you to see the position of the top 5 or bottom 5 items according to the current color variable.

Find: Type in any item name (or part thereof) to locate any item on the map.
Color code: Indicates the color range for the numerical value of the selected measure. Items with values outside this range are shown in the map as solid blue or solid red, as appropriate. The box at each end of the bar allows the color scheme of the map to be customized.

Span: Controls the range of values shown on the Data Range. Moving the slider to the left constricts the data range, allowing more distinction between the colors (measures) shown on the map.

Depth: Controls the hierarchy depth to be shown. By default, the maximum depth is shown, but by moving the slider to the left, the lower categorization sectors are aggregated.
Crystallize: Filters the selection of items, so that the user can focus on or filter out the highest or lowest values based on the size or color parameter.
The handles on each side of the Crystallize bar determine which nodes should be filtered out.
The "Measure" and "Size" radio buttons determine what kind of filter to apply. Selecting "Measure" will filter the items on the basis of the color variable being displayed, while "Size" will apply the filter on the basis of the size variable.
Checking the "Symm" checkbox makes the left and right sliders move symmetrically.

Item details box: Move the mouse across the heat map boxes to reveal additional information related to a specific item.
Extra Links: Clicking on an item node displays links to more specific sector views, or links to the profile of the institution on the MIX Market.

System Requirements

The heat map will only be displayed on Internet Explorer version 4 and above, or Netscape Navigator version 4.76 or above. Unfortunately, we cannot ensure functionality on other systems.

Additionally, your browser must be capable of downloading and displaying Java applets. We only use standard web technologies, but your local network infrastructure may affect the ability to use this feature. In the event of problems, please consult info@themix.org or +1 202 659 9094.
