The Microfinance Information eXchange (MIX) today announced the release of its 2006 Latin America and Caribbean Microfinance Benchmarks. The benchmarks, based on sample data of a record 228 microfinance institutions in the Latin America/Caribbean region, represent the latest and most extensive microfinance institution performance information for the area.
“Benchmarks are critical to a healthy microfinance sector, providing a tool for assessment, review, and comparison, and ultimately providing a path for creating strong institutions. The participation of the microfinance institutions is integral to the strength of the industry in this region, and we greatly appreciate those institutions’ on-going collaboration with MIX,” stated Matthew Gehrke, regional manager for MIX.
The benchmarks are comprised of more than 60 key indicators, including financing structure, number of active borrowers, average loan balance per borrower and operational self-sufficiency, and for the first time will include information based on the type of credit products the microfinance institutions specialize in, such as microenterprise, consumer, commercial, and mortgage.
The 2006 Latin America/Caribbean Benchmarks signify the earliest release of data of this magnitude in MIX’s history, and the organization credits it network partners for the milestone.

MIX lanza los Benchmarks de América Latina y El Caribe 2006
El Microfinance Information eXchange (MIX) lanzó hoy sus Benchmarks de América Latina y El Caribe 2006. Los Benchmarks, basados en una muestra de 228 Instituciones de Microfinanzas de la región de América Latina y El Caribe, representan la información de desempeño de las instituciones de microfinanzas más completa y reciente disponible.
Los benchmarks están compuestos de más que 60 indicadores claves, incluyendo estructura de financiamiento, número de prestatarios activos, saldo promedio de créditos por prestatario, retorno sobre activos, autosuficiencia operacional, y por primera vez, incluyen información basada en el tipo de productos crediticios en que se especializan las instituciones de microfinanzas, como préstamos para microempresa y consumo.
“Los benchmarks son críticos para un sector de microfinanzas saludable, proveyendo una herramienta para asesorar, revisar, comparar, y finalmente, proveer una ruta para la creación de instituciones fuertes. La participación de las instituciones de microfinanzas es integral para la fortaleza de la industria en esta región, y agradecemos a las instituciones por su colaboración continua con MIX,” afirmó Matthew Gehrke, gerente regional para MIX.
Los Benchmarks para América Latina y El Caribe de 2006 significan el lanzamiento más temprano de datos de esta magnitud en la historia del MIX, y la organización reconoce a sus redes socios por este logro.
