African microfinance 2003 market study published in July 2005 by the MIX and CGAP (voir la nouvelle en Francais ci dessous - see French news below)

The Microfinance Information eXchange (MIX) and the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP) are pleased to announce the publication of the "Overview of Outreach and Financial Performance of Microfinance Institutions in Africa", the first comprehensive market study of the African microfinance sector.

This study financed by CGAP draws on the largest regional data set ever compiled by the MIX, with 163 institutions covering the diversity of the African microfinance sector. The regional coverage spans Central Africa, East Africa, the Indian Ocean, Southern Africa and West Africa and the various participating institutions include formal commercial banks, savings and postal financial institutions, rural banks, credit unions and cooperatives, non-bank financial intermediaries, non-governmental organizations and microfinance projects. The paper addresses two main questions: how does the performance of the African microfinance sector compare with that of its global peers and how does performance vary among sub-regions and institutional types?

The 163 institutions are examined through the lens of standard industry performance metrics over a series of indicators: outreach (breadth and depth), financial structure, financial performance, efficiency and productivity, and portfolio quality.

The MIX wishes to thank all participating MFIs for sharing their financial and outreach information and thus allowing industry analysts to improve their understanding of the region and learn important lessons from these institutions'
experience.

Le Microfinance Information eXchange (MIX) et le Groupe Consultatif d'Assistance au pauvres (CGAP) a le plaisir de vous annoncer la publication en Juillet 2005 de «l'Etude sur la portée et les performances financières des institutions de microfinance en Afrique», la première étude approfondie du secteur de la microfinance en Afrique.

Cette étude, financée par CGAP, est extraite du plus grand ensemble de données régionales compilées par le MIX, avec 163 institutions couvrant la diversité du secteur de la microfinance en Afrique. La représentation régionale couvre l'Afrique centrale, l'Afrique de l'Est, l'Océan Indien, l'Afrique australe et l'Afrique de l'Ouest; de plus, les institutions participantes incluent des banques commerciales formelles, des caisses d'épargne postales, des banques rurales, des mutuelles et coopératives, des intermédiaires financiers non bancaires, des organisations non gouvernementales et des projets de microfinance. Cette étude considère deux questions principales: comment la performance du secteur de microfinance africain se compare-t-elle avec celle d'autres régions et comment varie cette performance parmi les IMF africaines?

Les 163 IMF africaines sont examinées au travers de paramètres de performance standard de l'industrie selon une série de variables: étendue et degré de portée, structure financière, performance financière, efficience et productivité, et qualité du portefeuille.

Le MIX tient à remercier toutes les institutions participantes d'avoir partagé leurs informations et d'avoir ainsi contribué à une meilleure compréhension du secteur de la microfinance dans la région.
