Hivos is a non-governmental organisation, rooted in The Netherlands and guided by humanist values, that wants to contribute to a free, fair and sustainable world where citizens, women and men, have equal access to resources, opportunities and markets and can participate actively and equally in decision-making processes that determine their lives, their society and their future. Hivos central policy areas are civil society building and sustainable economic development.

Hivos supports the financial sector in developing countries at different levels through its Financial Services and Enterprise Development department.

Hivos has developed a range of products adapted to the needs of microfinance institutions (MFIs). These products are:

1) Seed Capital Package for young MFIs. The Seed Capital Package consists of a grant transferred in tranches, based on conditional minimum performance targets. It can be used to expand the loan portfolio, for investments, start-up losses, capacity building, or for activities aiming to improve the quality and relevance of financial services. For more details refer the attached policy paper.

2) Support for meso and macro level financial sector development. Hivos a.o. supports microfinance networks that promote the quality of financial services, performance standards, and lobby for a favourable policy environment. Hivos is also networking, lobbying and knowledge sharing by linking MFIs, microfinance and micro-insurance experts and organisations specialised in gender, environment and HIV/AIDS. Hivos special areas of interest include: Social Performance Management, Savings, Micro-insurance (especially health insurance) and Membership based micro-finance.

For more established MFIs loans and equity investments are provided through the Hivos Triodos Fund (HTF) (refer the HTF profile at the MIX).

Hivos is a founder-member of MicroNed, the Microfinance Network of Dutch Co-Financing Organisations.
