Organisational Background:
Adhikar is a not-for-profit organisation registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. It was established in 1993 at the initiative of the present President, Mr. Md. N. Amin and a few other like-minded people. Adhikar started its microfinance operation in March 2001 by promoting SHGs and savings and credit cooperatives. With a view to scale up the programme, it came out with a direct lending programme in June 2004, which was named as “Sanchayika”. The programme was started with an initial financial support from FWWB. Currently, Adhikar has reached out to about 50,000 poor families, which are spread across 250 villages and 15 slums in 7 districts of the state (Orissa). In the course of its journey, Adhikar has been a part of few national networks like Sa-Dhan, Sahanti, OSSUP and Forum Asia, an international alliance dedicated to strengthening civil society & global peace.
Main Challenges:
Adhikar’s management system is still in a formative stage. There is a need to improve this in the future, which will otherwise limit its growth and can impact the quality of operations, adversely. Besides this, a low capital adequacy is another challenge, which poses a significant risk towards growth and sustainability.
