DEMOS is a nationally registered financial institution whose mission is to provide financial and non-financial products and services throughout Croatia to those with limited access to formal financial services. DEMOS targets low-income clients, primarily in the agricultural sector, most of whom do not have access to credit through the formal banking system. DEMOS also focuses on low-income entrepreneurs who want to start or expand small businesses. The approval or rejection of a client’s application for a DEMOS loan is based on their needs and capacity to operate a profitable, economically viable activity in agriculture, manufacturing, retail and trade. DEMOS is currently at an exciting time in its life as an organization. After its founding in 2000 as a Savings and Loan Cooperative, it has now achieved financial and operational sustainability and operates across many areas of Croatia, serving over 1,800 active clients with over $2.5 million in lending and savings products.
Today, the main challenge faced by DEMOS is to complete its transformation into a licensed Savings Bank and to locate additional debt or equity funding to support increasing client demand. The new Croatian Law on Banking passed in December 2006 will allow DEMOS to more effectively serve the needs of Croatian citizens who lack access to financial services. Ocultar
