AMFOT started its activity in 2000 when several non-governmental organizations involved in implementing microfinance programs formed a Coalition of Tajik MFO on a voluntary basis to jointly address challenges and protect their rights and interests. AMFOT was officially registered in January 2004 and is one of the first organizations of this kind in the Central Asian region. Since February 2005 AMFOT started fruitful cooperation with German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) under the Project “Microfinance Support Services in rural areas” and Central Asian Microfinance Alliance II (CAMFA-II) being financed by USAID and implementing its activity under the project (2006–2009). One of the components of this project supports the improvement potential and strengthening of Microfinance Associations in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The new partner of Associations in 2006 became Development Agency (ICCO). Owing to the constructive support of these organizations AMFOT became a unique resource center of the microfinance sector and a national-wide forum for interaction between microfinance organizations and the Government of Tajikistan, National Bank of Tajikistan, community, international donors and investors. As a part of its mission AMFOT contributes to forming a favorable legal environment, provides professional trainings and consulting to microfinance organizations and fosters introduction of national standards of microfinance activity. AMFOT cooperates with all types of microfinance institutions regardless their legal form, location, principles of finance, size and level of development. AMFOT’s activity is based on the principles of good faith, transparency and high quality of offered services. At the time being AMFOT unifies 60 more prospective and viable microfinance organizations and international organizations well-known in Tajikistan such as German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and Mercy Corps, lending organization LLC "Frontiers" and commercial bank OJSC "Agroinvestbank", First Microfinance Bank.
