Fonidi's mission is to make capital available to finance financial organizations or institutions; and/or Funds that offer financing to NGOs, to non-bank financial institutions or to commercial banks that are active in community finance or Microfinance, in developing countries or countries in transition with which DID has or is planning to have partnerships for technical assistance.

The five objectives of Fonidi are to:

1. Enable the growth of promising institutions of the social economy in developing countries or countries in transition
2. Combine technical partnership with financial partnership
3. Enable a closer link between Desjardins and other Canadian stakeholders with foreign partners
4. Act as a lever to attract additional financial resources from international donors
5. Present a viable diversification strategy for investments that are targeting a reasonable financial return for the investors
