Amret, formerly known as Ennetean Moulethan Tchonnebath “EMT” meaning credit in rural area, was initially established in 1991 as an experimental project by a French NGO Groupe de Recherche et D’Echange Technologiques (GRET). To be a long term sustainable institution, EMT was transformed into a private limited company in 2000. Then EMT received its (first) MFI license from the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) in May 2001. For a better communication purpose to its target clients, EMT was renamed as “Amret”, which is literally meant in Khmer word as “Immortality or Sustainability”, in 2004. After becoming a leading microfinance institution in Cambodia, with over eighteen years of experience, Amret has obtained an additional License which is called “License to Conduct Deposit Taking Business” dated 22 January 2009 from the Central Bank. Amret currently operates in fourteen provinces that situate in the middle and southern part of the country. By December 2009, she had total assets of USD 72 million and gross loan outstanding (loan portfolio) of USD 55 million with 226, 000 active clients. Additionally, the institution is taking an inclusive approach to provide comprehensive financial solutions that are specifically tailored to the needs of people in rural areas and to mobilize saving from public.
