The SCED program was started in 1993 by the private fund of the AVA Executive Director. The 1996 proclamation Number 40/96 allowed the SCED program to move on and become organized as an MFI namely the Africa Village financial services share company. AVFS was registered as a private share company on november 6, 1998 with a paid up share capital of birr 200,000.00. It is licensed by the National Bank of Ethiopia, which is the supervisory body for all MFIs. AVFS has seven individual private shareholders of which six are women and five Board members of which four are women.
