For more than 60 years, various agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) have offered microfinance products and services through integrated development programmes and as self-standing microfinance institutions.
These institutions, which are now administered by AKAM, contribute to poverty alleviation, economic growth and social cohesion in 12 countries in the developing world. The microfinance programmes, microfinance institutions (MFIs) and regulated microfinance banks have delivered over USD 200 million in loans since their inception.
The AKDN began operations in Egypt through the Historic Cities Program of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Microfinance operations began in 2001 under the auspices of the Aga Khan Culture Services Egypt and FMF, formally, began operations in December 2005.
Since inception, FMF has experienced rapid growth. In Cairo, FMF serves Darb al Ahmar, Gameliya and Manshyat Nasser. In the Governorate of Aswan, FMF serves Aswan City, Kom Ombo, Idfu, Daraw and Nasar el Nuba. To date, FMF has disbursed approximately USD $12 million to over 32,000 borrowers. Cacher

*As of January 2008, FMF will provide Death and Disability microinsurance for clients to protect the value of their loan through an agreement with Allianz, the Surety Fund and Planet Finance. The policies will be provided with every new loan starting January 1, 2008 and will cover the term of the loan. The policy covers 110% of the loan amount up to a maximum loan size of 50,000LE. In the unfortunate event of a death or permanent disability, the client's family will receive 110% of the loan value minus the outstanding balance. This service will be provided for no extra charge to the client. Cacher
