The Lead Foundation is an Egyptian non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 2003 under NGO law number 84/2002, specializes in the delivery of microfinance services to Egypt's economically active poor and has started in the Greater Cairo area, Lead was initially established with the contributions of individuals of the Egyptian private sector of the business, NGO, government, and banking communities with a rich and diverse breadth of experience, who are committed to playing a major role in the social and economic development of the country, and with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Lead Foundation continues to respond to social needs by identifying the most effective interventions likely to have positive social and economic by focusing on reaching out directly to two segments of the society who are in most need of empowerment: Poor and Low-Income entrepreneurs as well as women.

Lead has two target markets for achieving its mission of supporting the expansion of Egypt's small business sector, leading to increased employment, incomes, and living standards. The first group is very poor women who live in both rural and urban areas. Lead targets women who have the ambition to expand an existing business or start a new business, but lack the education, documentation, or social standing to access finance from banks. These women are generally served through Group Loans.

Lead also serves entrepreneurs, (male and female), of varying degrees of education already engaged in productive, commercial, or service businesses who have been marginalized from the financial sector for various reasons. These entrepreneurs are generally served through individual loans.
