Opportunity International Savings and Loans Limited was born of the belief that a transformational, formal financial institution was needed to make a lasting economic impact on the entrepreneurial poor in Ghana. In 2001, the Opportunity International Network initiated a strategy to convert Sinapi Aba Trust, its NGO partner operating in Ghana since 1994, into a formal financial institution. Three branches were subsequently transferred in exchange for shares. A license to begin business in savings and loans was granted by the Bank of Ghana in June 2004.
