Société Générale Group provides financial support (debt and equity) to Microfinance sector.
As a global full-service bank, the Société Générale Group operates in nearly 38 countries outside France. The Group's subsidiaries are significant economic players in their respective environments, providing finance for economic operators, businesses and individuals that are "integrated" into the national economies concerned. They cannot, however, directly reach the vast target audiences that do not fall within the criteria traditionally applied by banking institutions.
The geographic scope covered by Société Générale Group, consisting for the most part of emerging countries, is generally underbanked, often in correlation with a low or medium Human Development Index1.
The involvement of Société Générale group in microfinance is lead by its determination to play a full role in the economic development of the emerging countries in which it operates. Microfinance institutions have the expertise to provide access for the greatest number to basic financial services : their activities complement those of the traditional commercial banks.
