Alternativa´s mission is to contribute to equitable economic development through support for small and micro-enterprises and the creation of a financial resource base by providing loans to small business owners, financial training and consulting services. It assists local artisan workers in forming and operating cooperatives to strengthen the market and support each other in business management. It surveys the development needs and assets of micro-enterprises and applies the information toward strategic development techniques for low-income clients. Alternativa tiene como mision construir una cultura ciudadana que permita actuar como ciudadanos y como empresarios, aportando al desarrollo local en conjunto con las instituciones locales. Ciudadania con competencias mejoradas incidiendo en las politicas publicas locals, movilizando activos comunitarios, coadyuvando a la construccion de singergia entre los actores locales alrededor de las tareas desarrollo local. Alternativa was created in 2000 at the initiative of a group of professionals that previously worked for a local microfinance institution. The strength of the institution lies in the experience of its staff and their knowledge of the MSME sector and the market. Moreover, the staff who are managing the organization are known by their clients because of their previous work with other financial institutions. Starting from 2005 Alternativa has experienced both qualitative and quantitative growth, which is reflected in its financial and operational results. La institucion Alternativa nacio en al ano 2000 por iniciativa de un grupo de profesionales que trabajaron anteriormente en una financiera, creando un capital inicial. Se elaboraron proyectos para la busqueda de financiamiento, logrando el capital acumulado a la fecha. La fortaleza de esta institucion ha sido la experiencia de su personal, el concimiento del sector de las MIPYMES y del territorio. Ademas, el personal al frente de la institucion es conocido por los clientes por su participacion en las instituciones en que trabajaron anteriormente.
