FAMA was created in 1992 with the support of ACCION International. Today, FAMA has a total of 22 branches, 6 branches in Managua and 16 throughout Nicaragua. FAMA's principal challenge is to become a formal financial institution. FAMA won the 2002 Excellence in Microfinance Award for Non-Regulated Institutions, given by the Inter-American Development Bank. Also in 2004, FAMA won the First Regional Microfinance Award given by the CentralAmerican Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI). Hide

FAMA has also introduced a number of new financial services, including credit line, house credit, rapid credit and short-term credit to cover occasional expenses for school, Christmas, Easter and other holidays. FAMA has adopted Diálogo de Gestiones ("Dialogue of Managers"), a business training program created by Centro ACCION that builds on the knowledge and experience of borrowers. It has also extended its microcredit operations into new market segments, designing financial products for rural micro-entrepreneurs and small businesses.
