"FMFB Tajikistan was founded in August 2003, when it was officially registered with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan. The Bank was issued a banking license in September of the same year, and in February 2004, the Bank was officially established. Operations commenced on July 1, 2004. Prior to this, all AKDN microfinance activities in the country were conducted via the ESF (under the auspices of AKFED), or via MSDSP. In the summer of 2007, the Bank acquired MSDSP’s loan portfolio in Khatlon, which was a significant event, because it meant that all AKDN microfinance activities were now managed by the Bank.
FMFB is currently the only specialised micro-finance bank in the country. The Bank’s mandate is to provide a comprehensive range of financial services primarily to the poor, throughout the entire country. In addition to the Head Office in Dushanbe, the Bank also has branches in Khorog, Gharm, Khujand and Kulyab. The branches are supported by a far-reaching network of 33 district offices serving semi-urban and rural areas. The past five years have seen growth and expansion of the Bank, but in 2009 the weakening global macroeconomic climate and specifically the reduction in local economic activity precipitated by the decline in the value of inward remittances from Tajiks abroad had a significant and negative impact on the Bank’s business. The Bank continues to focus on lending and other areas of the business, such as deposit taking, in order to maintain its current levels of growth and to achieve its social objectives of assisting the poor
