BACKGROUND:
JRDM was born in the shape of a Youth Club in 1985. The main objective of the club was to help disaster-affected people of the area. In the year 1995 there was a severe flood which affected the total area of Joypurhat district to a great extent. As a result a great number of people lost their lives. Thousands of houses, livestock, crops and other properties were destroyed. The disaster was so severe that the club needed external help and support to face the situation. They sought the help and cooperation of the local people and started relief and rehabilitation programs in a planned manner. Later the Youth Club turned into a non-profit organization and got its new name “Joypurhat Rural Development Movement”. So, historically JRDM is an organization “created by the people, managed by the people and worked for the people”.
