In 2001, the Opportunity International Network initiated a strategy to convert Sinapi Aba Trust, its NGO partner operating in Ghana since 1994, into a formal financial institution. Three branches were subsequently transferred in exchange for shares. A license to begin business in savings and loans was granted by the Bank of Ghana in June 2004. The first branch was opened in Kumasi in September 2004, followed by Accra in August 2005, and Techiman in December 2005.
