Read moreIn mid-2001, a group of young professionals began giving mirocredits in the municipality of Derquí (within the district of Pilar, 50kilometers outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina). Fundación Progresar is the non-profit organization that was founded through their initiative, aiming to improve the socioeconomic reality of sectors of Argentina with little access to resources.
In November of 2001, the education department of the Fundación started its activities. An initiative was launched that provides out-of-classroom school support to children in the same area. This later became Educación para Crecer (EPC). One year later, a program of honor loans for university studies was founded called Estudiar para Crecer (EsPC). And finally in 2005, a the education department of Progresar launched a program called Crecer en Familia (CEF) which helps children stay in school thorugh scholarships and compromises their families in their education by means of monthly workshops.
By December of 2004, the Fundación had awarded loans to 372 micro-entrepreneurs, totaling 318,057 ARS (approximately USD 106,019). In less than two years, the Fundación had nearly quadrupled the monetary amount of loans awarded. By November of 2006, the Fundación had awarded 1,275,720.35 ARS (USD 425,240.17) to 724 different micro-entrepreneurs. By December 2008 Progresar had awarded 6.323 loans totaling 4,343,025 ARS (US$ 1,240,064) in accumulated disbursements.
Additionally, by december 2008 Progresar was providing out of school education to 250 children of Derqui and Matheu, working with 60 families by means of workshops for parents and helping 7 students finish their higher education by means of honor loans.
The challenges Fundación Progresar faces are related to effectively implementing programs that make up for the lack of opportunities available to the targeted population. Currently, the operational self-sustainability of the Fundación is at 37%, which compounds the challenge of implementing programs. Additionally, the Fundación seeks to facilitate education and community development as well as economic growth, which makes the challenge even bigger given these educational programs rely exclusively on donations.
However, today, the main challenge we face is the lack of financing available to bust the microcredit program and continue working towards self sustainability.
Despite these challenges, we believe this is the moment to pose our new growth objectives so that the loan and housing credit program can rise to meet the needs of the many more people without access to credit.
