Background:
The TYM Fund was founded in 1992 by the Vietnam Women's Union in order to help implement the poverty alleviation programme of the Government. It is a replication of the Grameen banking model adapted to the specific context of Vietnam. Along the process of development, TYM has received financial and technical support from a number of international organisations such as ACT (Japan), CARD, Grameen Trust, OXFAM America, SBFIC (Germany), CORDAID (Netherlands), Ford Foundation and others. Today TYM has more than 35,000 women members in 9 North and central Vietnamese provinces from Vinh Phuc to Nghe An. During 17 years of its operation, TYM Fund has assisted more than 50,000 women in overcoming poverty, participating in community activities and management.
Challenges:
TYM Fund has applied to register with the State Bank Of Vietnam as a licensed microfinance institution under Decree 28/165. TYM has the goal to further professionalise its operations and expand its out-reach to many more poor women, especially in areas not covered by other programmes. This will require training of staff, organisational improvements, installation of an adequate management information system, tapping additional funding resources. Hide
