Networks

The establishment of AMIZ is a result of the Action Research Programme that was introduced in Zambia in June 1996. This programme was funded by the World Bank and implemented by local microfinance institutions (MFIs). This group of MFIs called the “Zambia World Bank Action Research Champion Team (in short “the Champion”) was composed of six MFIs who were on an alternating basis responsible for the co-ordination and implementation of various projects of the Action Research programme.

Since March 1998 the “Champion” network of microfinance institutions, established an umbrella organisation called the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Zambia (AMIZ). The association is registered under section 7 (1) of the Societies Act under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The activities undertaken by the network and financed by SIDA, World Bank and USAID include researches, workshops, summits and publication of technical papers.

These ad-hoc activities have enabled AMIZ to build up a track record in the implementation and co-ordination of microfinance related projects.

Mission:
The mission of AMIZ is to facilitate, support and upgrade the activities undertaken by member MFIs and represent them in the best way possible by utilizing microfinance best practices.

Vision:
The vision of AMIZ is a strong and viable microfinance sector in Zambia.

The specific objectives of AMIZ are:
1) To disseminate and exchange information on key issues related to microfinance
2) To lobby government, donors and other stakeholders on issues of law, enabling environment, and support programmes for microfinance as well as the need to develop strong and dedicated micro entrepreneurs in order to spur sustainable microfinance development
3) To be a coordinating and representative body for member microfinance institutions
4) To strengthen lateral learning among practitioners
5) To facilitate sustainable business development services to microfinance institutions
6) To support best practices and innovative techniques utilized by microfinance institutions in Zambia
7) To establish and maintain professional standards of microfinance conduct among member microfinance institutions and the industry in general
